ISO: What It Is?

ISO: What It Is?

ISO, as already mentioned, has been an international reference body in the development of standards for quality management systems and tools since 1979. Through its standards, ISO provides companies with concrete guidelines on how to improve the quality of their products and services, responding in a structured and continuous manner to customer needs.

The ISO 9000 family was created precisely out of the need to address the various aspects of quality management in a systematic way and to bring together some of the most relevant ISO standards. This set of standards is now one of the main global references for quality management systems.

In the context of the distribution of screws, structural bolts, and mechanical components, this means that every stage—from the selection of suppliers to the storage of thousands of items to delivery to the end customer—is proceduralized and traceable.

The ISO 9000 family defines the fundamental concepts, reference terminology, and guiding principles of quality management, identifying seven principles on which all control systems covered by these standards are based. Among the most relevant are customer focus, active involvement and full commitment of top management, a process approach, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

For more detailed information on the seven principles of quality, please refer to our dedicated article.

What is meant by ISO 9001?

ISO certification is the best known and most widely used standard for quality management systems worldwide. It is therefore an international mark that demonstrates how the company complies with the minimum requirements of the standard. This certificate allows a company to become competitive in its target market and to increase end-user confidence. In fact, the certificate attests that the services or products placed on the market are traceable to specific specifications and that their production is proceduralized, traceable, and verifiable.
Consequently, the main benefits of ISO 9001 certification can be summarized as follows:

  • Customer confidence: adopting these standards allows the organization to implement a structured and effective quality control system, helping to increase customer confidence and satisfaction.
  • Effective complaint management: the ISO 9001 standard provides clear guidelines for managing and resolving customer complaints, promoting timely interventions and solutions consistent with expectations.
  • Process improvement: these standards support the identification and elimination of inefficiencies and waste, allowing for the optimization of business operations and decision-making based on objective data.
  • Continuous improvement: periodic audits and system reviews, as required by the standard, encourage organizations to constantly improve their processes, maintaining competitiveness and solidity in the long term.

These benefits not only improve internal efficiency, but also increase customer confidence and open up new market opportunities.
For SMEs, ISO 9001 certification helps strengthen customer confidence by demonstrating a concrete commitment to quality and operational excellence. It can also facilitate access to new markets, where certification is often an essential requirement for participating in public tenders or establishing partnerships with large companies.

How can ISO9001 certification be obtained?

ISO 9001 certification must be requested from an accredited Certification Body, which verifies the company's compliance with the requirements of the standard. The certification body operates independently and may, if necessary, work alongside a specialized consulting firm that supports the company in the design and implementation of the quality management system.

In Italy, the body responsible for accrediting certification bodies is Accredia, the Single National Accreditation Body.

To obtain ISO 9001 certification, the company must demonstrate that it has implemented a structured organizational system that complies with the requirements defined by the standard. These requirements apply to all business processes, from sales to purchasing management, from production to support services.

The processes must be formalized and documented through tools such as the quality manual, operating procedures, work instructions, and other system documentation. In addition, all activities related to quality management must be tracked and recorded using specific forms (quality records) to demonstrate the effective application of the system.

ISO 9001 certification is valid for three years. During this period, annual surveillance audits are required, while at the end of the three-year period, certification can be renewed through a new certification audit.

What is the main purpose of the UNI EN ISO 9001 standard?

The main purpose of UNI EN ISO 9001 is to define the requirements for designing, implementing, and maintaining a quality system over time. It is therefore a standard aimed at the continuous and constant improvement of a company that aims to optimize its organizational structure. A company that demonstrates a high standard in its products and services will be destined to satisfy its customers and retain their loyalty over time.
The customer defined by ISO 9001 is not only the person or organization that purchases the products or services, but also anyone who could receive, receives, or has requested a product. The term “customer” therefore refers to the end user, the retailer, the beneficiary, and the purchaser—anyone who can use the products and requires credibility and reliability.

Who is required to have ISO 9001 certification?

Compliance with ISO 9001 is not required by law. However, it is important to note that this requirement is now necessary for participating in tenders, for registration in customer supplier lists, and as an obligation in the product sector in which a company operates. Therefore, although not mandatory, it is a mark that allows a company to expand and carry out its work safely.

In practice, ISO 9001 certification is now a benchmark for demonstrating an organization's ability to manage its processes in a controlled and consistent manner. For many companies, especially those operating in B2B or within structured supply chains, having certification means meeting market expectations and reducing operational risks, while strengthening their credibility with customers and partners.

What are the advantages of management system certification?

Choosing to adhere to ISO 9001 is not a status symbol, but a strategic choice that allows a company to improve its service, reduce errors, and be rewarded by the market. Univiti has chosen to obtain and maintain this certification since 2024, recognizing that quality is not just about the product, but every aspect of the organization.

Among the most significant advantages for a company in our sector are the improvement in the quality of the organization, which translates into more efficient and less error-prone processes, and the reduction of operating costs. Through the standardization of procurement and storage procedures, it is possible to reduce waste related to inventory errors or non-compliant supplies.

Another key aspect is the opening up of new markets, both domestic and international. ISO 9001 certification is recognized worldwide and is often a minimum requirement for accessing tenders. For a company that aspires to grow beyond national borders, this represents a decisive competitive advantage.

Certification also promotes customer loyalty and increases the company's credibility. Our customers appreciate the traceability that certification requires: each batch of fasteners is identifiable and certified. In an industry where the safety and reliability of materials are paramount, this level of transparency is a significant competitive advantage.

Obtaining ISO 9001 certification is a way for a company to consolidate its reputation and thus secure access to new markets.

Towards a new ISO 9001: the 2026 revision

The ISO 9001 standard will be revised in 2026. The update process is already well underway: the first Draft International Standard (DIS) has been published and submitted for voting and comments by stakeholders. The new edition is expected in the second half of 2026, tentatively between October and November.

To learn more about the main changes in the draft, please see our article.
